Marija Pavlović - soloist with Montreal Chamber Orchestra

Maestra Wanda Kaluzny and the Montreal Chamber Orchestra
present clarinettist  Marija Pavlovic

On April 24, 2008, Croatian clarinettist Marija Pavlovic makes her Canadian debut with Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto, in A Major and the world premiere of Canadian composer Jim McGrath’s Suite for Clarinet and String Orchestra.  The programme also includes Wiren’s Serenade for String Orchestra, op. 11 and Schubert’s Symphony no. 5 in B flat Major (http://www.mco-ocm.qc.ca/april_24_2008.htm).
Pavlovic was born in Dubrovnik in 1975, and began studying the clarinet at the age of 9.  In 1994 she continued her musical education at the Academy of Music of Zagreb.  After graduating in 1997, she started a postgraduate degree at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria with Alois Brandhofer, principal clarinet of the Berlin Philharmonic.  Ms. Pavlovic currently resides in Belgium.
When she was fourteen, Pavlović was awarded first prize at the Clarinet Competition in Zagreb and has continued to garner awards including the 1997 International Yamaha Prize for Woodwinds, first prize in the 1998 Croatian Radio Competition, the American Express Award and Zagreb Philharmonic Award for 'the most talented and most successful young musician of 1998'. In 2006 she received the "Poulenc award" in the IBLA Grand Prize Competition in Ragusa, Italy and she won first prize in the AudiMozart Competition in Rovereto, Italy (http://www.mozartitalia.org/uk/news/audimozart_2006/winners.html). Her appearance with the Montreal Chamber Orchestra is a part of that prize (http://www.mozartitalia.org/uk/news/audimozart_2006/extraprizes.html).
Composer Jim McGrath (http://www.jimmcgrath.ca/) is a Toronto-based composer best known for his film and television work including scoring his seventh season of the award-winning series Degrassi:  The Next Generation for CTV for which he received the 2006 Gemini award for Best Original Score for a Dramatic Series.   He has orchestrated and conducted film scores with the Munich Symphony, the Salt Lake Symphony, the London Philharmonia and the City of Prague Philharmonic.  The four movements that make up the exquisite Suite for Clarinet and String Orchestra encompass a lilting waltz, a Satie-esque Pastorale, a sneaky hoedown and a whirlwind Vivace.  This evening’s performance marks the world premiere.  The Suite for Clarinet and String Orchestra is featured on Cinématique, a new CD of Jim McGrath’s orchestral compositions.

Admission to the concert is free thanks to the support from the Music Performance Fund and our sponsors.
