At the recent 5th Annual Meeting of Institute of Neurosciences, Mental Health and Addiction (INMHA) held in Toronto, May 22–23, 2007, Alain Baudet, Director of le Fonds de la recherche en santé du Québec (FRSQ) and Remi Quirion, Director of the Institute of Neurosciences, Mental Health and Addiction (INMHA) of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), announced the establishment of a new FRSQ-INMHA fellowship named after Dr Albert J. Aguayo of McGill University, past President and past Secretary-General of IBRO, to mark his outstanding contribution to neuroscience in Quebec, Canada and the world. Dr Aguayo is a long-term champion of IBRO and of the Neuroscience School Programme, recipient of many prestigious awards including the Prix du Québec (Wilder-Penfield) in 1994.

The purpose of this special award is to enable students from developing countries to spend a three-month term in a Quebec laboratory. One fellowship of $8,000 (including living and travel expenses) would be awarded annually to be funded equally by INMHA and FRSQ through a joint selection process.

Following the announcement of the AJA fellowship:
Ante Padjen, Remi Quirion, Astrid Eberhart, Albert J Aguayo, Ana Valez and Lucas Alvarez (students at the
1st Canadian IBRO School) and Alain Baudet.

Proposed Terms of the Award

•    The fellowship will be open to students from developing countries in four of the six IBRO Regions:  Africa, Asia-Pacific, Central & Eastern Europe and Latin America.
•    The specific criteria for the award, the application procedure and selection process will be jointly developed by IBRO, FRSQ and INMHA. The selection process will be coordinated with the assistance of the relevant IBRO Regional Committees.
•    Fellowships will be tenable in Quebec within 12 (six) months of being awarded. A list of prospective host laboratories will be provided as part of the call for applications but students may identify their own hosts.
